My fix (my wife's brilliant suggestion) was to put a piece of masking tape on the chisel bit to mark the desired depth (in addition to setting the stop), and watch to make sure I'm not exceeding the tape line with each cut. It seems to bind a bit on the auger screw, so I solve this by rotating the clamp slightly back and forth on the workpiece to release the pressure, then the clamp easily slides back up the screw.
